Questioning your gender over the course of several years gives you a lot of time for contemplation. With trans issues brought to the forefront of our social conversation between 2010 and 2020, there was discussion of what is and isn’t trans. Some people intensely wanted to define it. What version of being trans was acceptable and which versions weren’t. We also saw the rise of micro-communities connecting over social media—many celebrating what they love, and yet often more visible was seeing what they hated. Hating others is a lose lose, especially when you still need to find a way to love yourself. This song is a rejection of hate and an invitation to join the dance. David Bowie died January, 10th 2016, and the concern wasn’t we lost beauty and uniqueness that day, it was that our memory is short, and we might allow the voices that promote conformity and regression to a patriarchal system that keeps women in the home creating the workforce of tomorrow to silence us. This is a call to replace the voice we gave to David Bowie millions of times over with our own.
lyrics
Down in the dirt!
It’s the us help book slash dance
celebrating you, celebrating me, celebrating every tiny variation
We'll dance with vegan leather punks and leather men
with all of the the fishy furries and radical rad-femmes
and coal rollers
we, dance sweaty or separately together, in all our other skins
And if you, you’re cleaning your apartment right now, beat the carpet, and shake it out
we’ve lost our goblin king and now it’s our job to be
And flyer-bomb the world, with men in bikinis
it’s our job, our job, our job, to just be
It’s the us help book slash dance
It’s our choice to be missing and have no class
It’s the praying for the us help book slash dance
It’s how the earth separates, and crunches, and creates cracks
