This song is about getting over your fear of being seen. An experience maybe familiar to those who grew up in a household where drawing attention to yourself through style was viewed as lacking character. Written from the perspective of a queer adult who grew up in the punk scene, learning they’re not trans, still having a feminine side to express, while also still experiencing friction within the punk community. This is about giving yourself permission to be yourself. It reasons that all clothing choices are an expression of some form. And in the end, if society does find room to accept you, they’ll just appropriate that culture anyway and make money from it. So, don’t wait until you’re buying into your own identity. Be it today.
lyrics
finely tune in put that makeup on, glide the eyeliner pencil
it’s not vanity if it’s expected of you
it’s also not vain if no one gives a shit
so put that makeup on, put that makeup on
as a tattoo as a sweat-stained trucker hat, as a beard, as active fashion wear
and always let them forget it
and just remember Ben Franklin
who for whatever reason grew his hair out
we say vain like someone gives a shit
and even if they notice they’ll just take the value from it
and suddenly it wouldn’t be a selfie culture we’re living in
And eventually, yea eventually they’ll assimilate us
